The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 is known as the WARN Act in short. It protects workers and their families by requiring some employers (with 100 or more employees) to provide prior written notice (60 days in advance) to the employees of plant closings and mass layoffs affecting 50 or more employees at a single site of employment.
The employees, who are entitled to such notices under the WARN Act, include hourly workers, salaried workers, supervisors, and managers as well.
As per the WARN Act, such a notice should also be given to the representatives (unions) of the laid-off employees, the local chief elected official, and the state dislocated worker unit.
