Generally, banks deactivate an account, in case there has been absolutely no transactions carried out for a long period of time viz. 2-3 years. During the deactivation period, you will not be able to do any kind of transactions, i.e. either deposit or withdrawal in cash or cheque payment, etc.
The bank will also, most probably, levy some charges for the dormant period in case the minimum balance, as may be required to be maintained for your bank account, falls below the limit prescribed.
In case, you are interested to maintain that account, then you have to file a reactivation request with the bank either in the format prescribed by the bank or through submission of a physical letter. You may use the following template to write such a request letter to the bank.

Sub.: Request to reactivate my dormant bank account.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am the account holder for the savings account bearing number .................. maintained in your bank at .......... branch. I used to operate the account on a regular basis earlier. I have been facing a financial crisis lately. Due to an emergency, I had withdrawn the minimum balance from the account. Ever since I was not operating the account.
I understand the account is in dormant stage now and will be closed permanently if no transactions are carried out. I am interested in keeping the account alive and operating it. I am going to deposit a sum of Rs. ............ today in the account. I am looking forward to using the account for different financial purposes from now onwards.
Therefore, I kindly request you to reactivate my savings account to enable me to deposit the said amount and start using it again. I further submit my request that the dormant status of the account be removed once the deposit is made by me and the account be reinstated to its normal course so as to enable me to operate it.
Appropriate charges may kindly be deducted for this purpose.
Kindly do the needful.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
